    ----------------------------------
Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel and to a great video about the famous BLACK BOX or Flight Data Recorder.
So what is this black box they always seem to be looking for?
The black box is very often split into two black boxes which will help the investigators to determine what and how it led to the accident.
Each box weighs roughly twenty-pound and each has the size of a shoebox.
One of them is the CVR, cockpit voice recorder. Picture a classic tape recorder with four microphone cables attached to it. One leading into the radio control panels, to record any communication between the pilots and the air traffic controllers. One recording all conversation via the intercom within the cockpit and another one leading to the overhead panel microphone, recording ambient sounds of the cockpit such as engines and aural warnings.
When does it, and how much does it record?
It automatically starts recording if in flight and on ground when at least one engine is running and for a few minutes after the last engine was shut down. But on most planes, you have to the option to manually start CVR by pressing a button on its respective panel.
The CVR records the last two hours of crew conversation and communication with ATC. So whenever you arrive at the gate and shut down the engines you could listen to the last two hours of conversation. You can´t within in the cockpit, you would have to detach the recorder from its housing and place into a special docking station to listen to it.
Funny enough Airbus and Boeing models have a "CVR Erase" button, once you press that, all latest recordings get erased.
The other recorder or second black box is the flight data recorder.
The Flight Data Recorder, also known as ADR, the accident data recorder records data at a much larger scale.
Now the FAA regulates, that the FDR must monitor at least eighty-eight important parameters such altitude, airspeed, heading, aircraft attitude for a minimum of 25 hours.
Nowadays, FDRs made by Honeywell, for instance, can record up to 1000 in-flight parameters and characteristics such as flap position, auto-pilot modes, weather radar readouts and much much more to aid the investigators. This then allows the retrieved data from the FDR to generate a computer-animated video, reconstructing the flight before and during the crash. Which can look similar to this animation.
So the combination of the visual part by the FDR and the audio by the CVR enables a realistic picture for the investigators. So With the collected data from both recorders, the investigators determine whether an accident was caused by pilot error, by an external event (such as wind shear), or airplane technical failures.
But see more within the video ...
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
    Wishing you all the best!

Captain Joe, have you ever seen the 1980’s Sci-Fi movie, ‘Millennium’? It’s another great movie for reference to ‘Black Box’ operations. The basic premise of the story is, that a reproductively barren humanity from the far distant future, is time traveling back to our time to take people off doomed airliners mid-flight. If you haven’t seen it, you should really check it out. It’s a little cheesy, but great Sci-Fi.

Greeting Cpt. Joe, great channel, you give good energy. Although commenting on air accident investigations is understandably not something you want to do, you COULD comment on findings and recommendations in those published reports to learn and share what went wrong in the chain of safety procedures and what to improve, as I suppose you do already in your day job actually being a commercial pilot.

absolutely! the detail required in crash investigations is unbelievably intricate. an example would be the crash of galloping ghost at reno. they recovered fragments of solid state boards used in the camera and telemetry devices. the suspect cause was a nylon stop nut on an actuator for a trim tab. consider the visuals of that 400+ mph crash, then try to imagine getting pieces so small and so important. crash investigation take TIME, 18 months is not considered "long". armchair flyers need to really keep quiet. and newsrooms need to hold back and not sensationalize these tragedies!

The flight data recorder underwater pingers are antiquated and need updating. The frequency is too high so you will never find a really deep water crash. As higher frequencies are absorbed fast through the water column. The batteries run themselves out after 30 days rather than swapping to a low power respond only if it receieves a signal from a ship. It could last year's in this mode conserving battery. Modern technology has moved on so much since the FAA specification was written. The entire subsea oil and gas industry uses subsea acoustics to locate and position equipment every day so the towfish receivers need not be rare if they used the correct equipment.

Why are CVRs and FDRs dependent on aircraft power only. It seems that if they had a self contained backup battery that would keep them running for around 2 minutes after cabin power is lost there could be some important data recorded from any remaining inputs. It could also show where breakup first occurred by the order of inputs failing. In the Columbia disaster flight control saw sensors failing in the left wing then tire pressures etc. This was before the crew knew of any anomalies.

Etymologically, it's a "Black Box" with "Black" in the sense of hidden/unknown, very similarly to military "Black Projects". A box with purposes or principles of operation unknown to the aircrew or maintenance techs, although given the benign nature of the devices with regards to flight data recorders this principle is only vaguely in play inasmuch as everyone knows why it's there and at least the basic concepts of what it does and how; but while it can be switched on and off, it can't be readily erased or redacted. Mentioned in the Vietnam-era pilot's song "Thud Pilot": "Oh I'm a Thud Pilot, and I love my plane. She is my body, I am her brain. She's full of transistors, Black Boxes, diodes; but you aught to be careful, you'll get hurt when she explodes." A warplane has many things on it that are secrets, especially radio crypto boxes, which would appear on common schematics as perhaps-literal "black" or otherwise empty boxes, they're there, you know what signals they want and likely give, but not how they work.

For those of you who may be interested, Locomotives also have a Black Box in the "Nose" of the unit. Again, bright orange. It also collects any information about the train and the circumstances it is running in, as well as functionality to be downloaded on the fly remotely. It will also give audio from the exterior of the locomotive, which will give investigators noise cues. Finally it records the "Dashcam" facing outward, and inward if so equipped. Why in the nose? It is quite a strong section, similar to the tail portion of a plane, and also happens to be where most of the electrical control components are such as GE's Trip Op, The general engine management, and so on. It's almost like one big server box. In some Yard Locomotives, if so equipped, there will also be a Beltpack control box, where one can remote control the locomotive with a waist mounted box from a distance of 2 miles or so depending on geography.

Better question would be why are we still using 20th century technology in the 21st century it shouldn't be that difficult to broadcast the inputss to a satellite which would then rebroadcast it to the ground where the voice recorder information and the data recorder information could be copied to a server. This would negate the need to always find the black boxes you would always have a copy of what was on them right here on Earth. Also, I still don't see the need to be able to erase or turn off either of these recorders once the engines are started.

the only good reason for a pilot to make a video about an ongoing aircraft investigation is when the purpose is to (demonstratively) inform the investigative body about erroneous assumptions in a preliminary report. (I remember, from an ACI episode, that pilots used this in the mid 90's to inform the NTSB that a maneuver they called non-standard was actually a de facto standard and, more importantly, much safer than what they called the 'appropriate maneuver')

Why doesn't the Black Box just "eject itself" from the plane when a crash over water is imminent and float on top of the water? Seems like this would make it A LOT easier to find. It could also log the GPS coordinates of where the plane entered the water.

2:20 i dont like that Erase button! it's a public plane not a personal computer!? aircraft black boxes should reveal as much data as possible -- NOT LESS! and when pilots/crew are in the cockpit they're on-the-job, so they don't even have any reason to be concerned about "non-professional things they say that should be deleted before anyone hears them" in the first place. Why is this feature advantageous, and who is it advantageous for other than 1) cockpit hijackers, and 2) pilots speaking non-professionally in a way they fear their employer would suspend/fire them?

This was a very good video as always. Thank you. As for the "BLACK BOX". When I was in Naval training the instructor would diagram systems on the chalk board. When he came to a piece of electrical equipment whose function was either beyond the scope of the lesson, or classified above our clearance, it would simply be marked as BLACK BOX. I had always believed that this was also used in aviation. As in, all the wires go into the black box where magical things are done to preserve the necessary flight parameters.

lohphat its just too overkill. Yes on paper it seems decent but in practice, it is too much data throughput (black box info is really dense information) for something which ideally will never be used. Its something like having 3 engines instead of 2 to eliminate dual engine failures. On paper factually its correct but too overkill for implementation.

Captain Joe, Have you ever heard of a European video production company called PilotsEYE? http://pilotseye.tv/en/ They make multi-camera, high quality video recordings of commercial flights (both passenger _and_ cargo), often (though not always) including pre-start, mid-air and post-shutdown interviews with the flight crew. They cover international crews (German, French, American, etc.), provide regional translation subtitles, and often their DVDs follow those same crews for several days as they circle the globe in their flight! http://www.youtube.com/user/PilotsEye As I understand it, they are limited mostly by the amount of space they can have in the cockpit (they need at least one unused seat- a "jump seat"?- in the cockpit open for the entire flight). Also, passengers are not shown/highlighted unless broadly and generally in the terminal. Here's an example of one of their videos (on a different channel), which caught a mid-flight engine shutdown- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEf35NtlBLg Do you think your current airline company would be interested in allowing them to get onto one of _your_ flights?
