Can a crippled Tesla AutoPilot 2.0 still avoid a €300.000 collision in v9? - Testing The Tesla

You can use my referral code ts.la/steven1007 to get free supercharging when buying a new or inventory Tesla Model S, X or Model 3. For European Model 3 reservations, follow the instructions from this video until the configurator opens up for everyone: oxyeh2o.com/v-video-O1ft79vcjcY.html
Last year I did a test with a friend of mine on how the auto lane change reacts to the ultrasonics being taped off (oxyeh2o.com/v-video-lJwp__0T2nI.html). That didn't go well, as we nearly crashed into each other. I then suggested Tesla would have to use the side cameras in addition to keep it safe and redundant.
Now that the side cameras are active on autopilot v9, we tested it again and found out that the auto lane change can be done on cameras alone! And when the cameras are not capable of seeing enough, the system doesn't do it all together, which makes it more or less fool proof. I like it!

Hi Steven Where did the post in the forum and the video about Supercharger disappear?

After having Tesla look at the content of the video, they have found no real errors in there, so I've put the video back online. There is a minor remark that I'm calling the superchargers transformers, which I knew was incorrect, but wanted to keep it simple for a 101 video. Will do a 102 video on how the superchargers really work internally to get into the nitty-gritty details.

Ivan Albreht thank you so much for that. I really appreciate that! 👍

+Steven Peeters Personally, I believe that your posts on forum and videos and Bjorn's (Nyland) videos are the best ones in terms of knowing and using Tesla vehicles and other Tesla vehicle accessories. And thank You for that.

Ivan Albreht reposting that this weekend. Was causing too much controversy because of a few statements that were being misinterpreted. I do apologise for that, but I want the information that I share to be clear and not generate more questions or doubts than I try to answer.

Tamper with your car at your own risk. Would you drive while 'birdboxing'? Don't be stupid...

This is not tampering, but reproducing a valid scenario where your car gets mud, snow or ice built up on the sensors. It's good to know what happens when you are in this situation. I'm fully aware I'm disabling sensors on the car. That's the whole test scenario. And that is also why I warn all of you not to try this yourself, as I'm doing this in controlled circumstances. This is also one of the main reasons for starting this channel: to test AP to the limits and see what it can and definitely can't do!

Recently I had my ultrasonic sensors out of of order due to cable damage by animals, AP1 was still working in 1 lane. But when I try a lane change the steering didn't allow it and eventually switched off the AP. Of course with AP1 there is no camera backup, but no dangerous situations also.

KaeL good to know. But maybe a technical issue is handled differently than when being blocked. Would be interesting to see if I can get my hands on an AP1 car. Last year’s test was also AP2 already. That might be a difference in handling as well

+Steven Peeters It's a joke based on your "Don't try this at home" warning.

Previously auto lane change worked with just ultra sonics but now it doesn’t. That doesn’t make sense to me.

Peter Brennen as demonstrated in this video, it does not on AP2 cars. AP1 cars will definitely require it because those cars don’t have side cameras

+Steven Peeters Agree, slow speed is a better way of putting it.

Vor 20 Tage

+andy feimster ultrasonics are for low speed as well, as they extend out to about 9m distance. But yes, Elon clearly stated that our entire road system is based on vision, so the key is to get vision 100 times better than humans. Once all cars are autonomous, we can redefine the road system to work on a different system. But that could not be dramatically different, since that would then require to update all existing cars again.

Elon has said full autonomous driving will be by vision systems. Ultrasonic sensors are more for parking awareness.

+Andrew Hart Fair point. I guess they are going for a purely vision based system and keep the other sensors as optional and additional.
