A car has about 1GJ of energy in its gas tank, but an airplane needs to have around 1TJ of energy in its gas tank. GJ is gigajoule or 1 billion joules and TJ is 1 terajoule or 1 trillion joules. The way that airplanes fill gas is to calculate how much energy they need for the flight itself and some extra precautions mentioned in this video since the fuel itself has a lot of weight and a full tank does not have an acceptable fuel efficiency for the airplane. Wish for airplanes to go electric or use alternative energy, but making TJ capacity batteries don't seems to be ideal in this situation, but hydrogen fuel cells are a possible way to make aircraft go electric. NASA used hydrogen fuel cells in its spaceships in the past, so it is not a bad idea to try the newer fuel cells that can act like a battery, run at lower temperatures than fuel burning, a fuel cell can run at less than 100 degrees C compared to engines that simply burn fuel, and batteries run at room temperature, but are not doing well when it comes to TJ capacities for aircraft. So those rechargeable hydrogen fuel cells function by electrolysis of water to "charge" and then use the hydrogen and oxygen to get electricity from the electro-chemical reaction. Due to low air pressure at high altitiudes, the oxygen component is important on an airplane since cars will simply use air for oxygen in the fuel cells, so research is needed to build a fully enclosed battery like hydrogen fuel cell for both cars and airplanes, and to include ships and trains as well as buildings.

Sukra Raj Khaling tbh it depends on the plane and it’s weight and weather system. For small business jets 1-1.5km is sufficient. For bbj/acj about 2km will be adequate. However it can easily use less than the above length with various factors

You didn't mention "tankering", where for reasons of fuel cost or availability, the airline will add the fuel for the next leg of the trip so that the plane won't have to take on fuel when it lands. As an example, a plane flying from Phoenix to Los Angeles usually only needs 3,000 gallons for the trip. Since jet fuel costs twice as much in California, if the airplane is continuing on to another destination, say Spokane, Washington, the airline will order enough fuel in Phoenix to make the trip to Spokane, assuming it doesn't put the plane over the safe landing weight in LA. If it will, the airline will order enough in Phoenix so that they only have to "top off" in LA.

I fuel acft at TPA. None of the airlines here factor in APU burn in the fuel release. During our harsh rainy season I always add 200 to 500lbs more to the load. Airbus 319, 320, 321, and B737 APUs burn approximately 300lbs per hour depending on the load put on the APU. Many times the APU is left running during the entire servicing of the aircraft. Adding that extra amount greatly helps to reduce the chances of me being called back to do an uplift. Extremely aggravating. Pilots can request as much fuel as they please, but it is very much appreciated if they run that request through their ops so that the fuelers have documentation for the extra amount if in case (goodness forbid) a catastrophic event happens to the aircraft. The black box will store the EFQI info and investigators will compare that to the release. Don't want crash investigators pinning extra undocumented fuel on me when it was the pilot's request.

Imagine trapped living under the skies of a busy airport, or, living down wind. Such cities have plenty of truck and car traffic. Many major cities have ports and the large ships are the dirtiest polluters, heavier in microparticulate, due in part to the cheaper choices of low quality fuel. Fossil fuels have in them heavy metals and radionuclides, in addition, they have additives to effect how fuel burns and interact with the engine. Day after day people, animals, nature, water, and your food supply, be it feed animals or crops, are coated by this burnt fuel residue, breath it in and absorb it into their tissue. Jet fuel is like kerosene. Some aviation fuel still has lead. Carcinogens release is also unavoidable. The military is the single largest emitter of fuel exhaust, by far. The total of these exhausts interact with solar radiation and gases of the atmosphere. This alters climate, temperature, rain, solar panel performance, and lung function and a lot more. It never stops, almost. And there is noise pollution... In 911, MOST planes were grounded. Not only did air visibility change, but so did the weather over this brief cancellation. Ask yourself, how do we keep track of all the morbidity and mortality to any life, due to exhaust? Smelting and burning coal only makes it much worse.
