Dear friends and followers, today´s video is the follow up to last weeks video about the Instrument Landing System. Last week we spoke about how the ILS works, and today I´ll show you how to fly an ILS and especially what easy rules of thumb are out there which will make your life on the ILS a lot easier. Definitely some great advice for flight students, and simulator pilots.
Key facts you need to know about the ILS:
-Localizer deviation by one dot is 0,8°
-Glideslope deviation by one dot is 0.4°
-Imagine flying into a funnel, more space to correct at the wider part
-Less space and higher sensitivity the closer you come to the runway
-Standard turning rate of planes 3°/ second
-Time for turn in seconds = How much heading to turn divide by 3
-Bank angle = airspeed divided by 10 plus 7
-Wind correction angle: Wind deviation x Windspeed / TAS (True airspeed)
-Vertical Speed on 3° Glideslope = Groundspeed times 5
    Quote from video:
... These are the basics to capture and maintain the localizer and glideslope of the ILS, keep in mind, making corrections until you’re three to four nautical miles away from the threshold is relatively easy as you can do bigger corrections. But after passing the 1000 feet gate, you have to be fully established on the ILS, cause most airline standard operating procedure demand to perform a go-around if you are deviating one dot off the ILS to either direction. And the closer you get to the threshold the more sensitive the ILS becomes. Imagine flying through a funnel, you’ve got loads of space to correct where the funnel is wider, but the narrower it becomes, the less space you have.
Now you might think flying an ILS is fairly simple and easy. It sure is if you practice it on a daily basis, but your practice is only effective with the auto-thrust, autopilot and flight directors disengaged.
Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe

This guy would have a lot of fun with that Asiana crash at KSFO. But seriously, what would happen if the flight crew realizes a 4 or 5 degree a minute turn became required since they were sleeping as they were on approach to the ILS junction point?

In a Cessna 172, the airspeed calculation is much easier: do everything at 90 knots until you see the runway. Then slow down to 65 or 70 on short final.

A common flaw of many a modern professional pilot. In my KSFO example 3 veteran pilots, the two stated pilots had 40 thousand flight hours between them in experience anywhere, were on the flight deck making mistake after mistake calculating the rate of drop per minute so they were eventually in a position where 1.3 seconds before impacting a bay surf barrier they were doing 107 knots per hour when a harassed NTSB chairwoman later recommended a 140 knot speed rate. Can they just floor the acceleration controls at that point, it would take a few seconds for the plane to be at full power, let alone compensating for slow approach speed. it was quite a mess.

It is still easier than when I learned to do it 35 years ago with “steam gauges,” and procedure turns....and no autopilot. Modern equipment feels almost like cheating.

Just one thought: it's nice to know that I need 16 seconds to make that initial intercept turn, but what is important to know is when you are 16 seconds (maybe 18 for human and instrument lag) prior to the localizer centerline.

Thank you for this video. I have an idea of the ILS from my childhood days playing F-16 on my monochrome PC back in the 90's. This is a great explanation.I just have one question: When is a missed approach declared? I experienced this once when we were about to land in Singapore. The plane was gradually descending and slowing down, but all of a sudden I heard the engines come back to full power I think. The pilot announced it was a missed approach due to some ground traffic?!? and it was nothing serious. So the plane went ascended again and went around to try to land again.

Vor 3 Monate
A2DJP
A2DJP

kRx md missed approach is basically a go-around. What I guess what happened in ur case was an aircraft didn’t vacate the runway on time, hence the missed approach

I almost got it just need some explanation: You say: ''-Bank angle = airspeed divided by 10 plus 7'' My question is: Where did you get an unknown variable with value 7? What the 7 represents in this equation? Please don't be mad at me. I just want to understand.

Vor 4 Monate
A2DJP
A2DJP

Osiris Heart haha. Even I am a pilot, that’s why I answered the question. And yes, the size of the aircraft doesn’t matter, but the speed does. As long as the speed of the aircraft is below 180kts, the formula is applicable.

Vor 2 Monate

@+A2DJP Thanks for an explanation. However, I wanted the @ Captain Joe to explain this. I meant he is an actual pilot and especially if he is explaining mathematical calculation then he has to be clear about every single digit. This is not the first time I am asking @Captain Joe to explain unknown numbers in his equations and I have no answer from him at yet... I don't mind if it is just random number found via trial and error, but he should have said about it in order to be clear. Also, I would like to update my question by asking: If it is just 'number that works' then does it works to any aircraft or only for big airliners? (But he probably doesn't read comments...) Anyway, @A2DJP thank you for trying to help. I do appreciate it.

Vor 2 Monate

Osiris Heart 7 is just a constant which works. It’s most probably found out via trial and error

Hi Captain Joe. Where is part three? You left me wanting answers like, can the auto pilot follow the ILS signal or do you have to do this manually? Can you land the plane on auto pilot with this or do you always have to turn it off and VFR to the runway at some point?

That is the Radio altimeter and the aircraft does so because the aircraft is at a low altitude and both the pilots are engaged so the aircraft starts to tell the altitude to the pilots in order to make them comfortable with the landing.
