Private Pilot Tries To Fly The Airbus A320 | Take Off, Stall and Landing

Spacedock8
Spacedock8

Air conditioning packs on from the start would have saved you a lot of grief. You could have stopped most of the ECAM warnings by simply switching them on (buttons on the overhead panel) in flight. If you are not using the flight directors - TURN THEM OFF! This would have put autothrust in speed mode if you had left the thrust levers in the CLB detent. Engage manually selected speed by PULLING the speed selector knob. Getting into alpha floor is a good demonstration but you also need to know how to get OUT of it as autothrust goes into Thrust Lock on exiting protection. Now you know why professional pilots take a couple of months of ground school, simulator and flight training to get a type rating on their licences. Final approach looked pretty hairy (low and slow for most of it) but managed to rescue it at the end! Good effort.

Beautiful job!!! I did that back in 1995 in the Delta Flight Training Center. I had only 20 hours logged at the time and took off and landed a 727 sim. One of the best days of my life! :) Again, congrats man!!

Years ago, before 9/11, I had the opportunity to fly a Boeing 777 full-motion simulator. Like Ben, I was a private pilot certified for VFR flying only. The sim was incredible and felt just like I was flying the real thing. Even the runway was bumpy and we could feel the thrust as I added full power. It felt just like a Cessna in the way that it handled and responded to control inputs. However, anytime I had to climb or descend to a particular altitude, I seemed to reach it in an instant, unlike the slow 172. I got lucky and managed to grease the visual landing, but crashed when I tried it IFR. In any case, it was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget.

I'm not going to be the guy to crash this thing!" So I DID! I got her up, through a TINY bit of weather and back down again, and NO damage! Incredibly overwhelming cockpit, but Flight Instructor Bob talked me through it (Thanks, Bob!!). I've never worked so hard or sweat so much. Now I'VE got the hanger braggin' rights... BOOM!!! Haven't flown in years, but I can say its enjoyable to watch you at the controls. Just imagine, fatigue, strong winds, darkness and driving rain and trying to land manually.! And 59 pounds is basically a pretty good price for the simulator. I was quoted 490 RMB in a city in China to fly the a320 simulator .. so similar pricing.

Its a lot simpler than you would think. Every airplane has similar systems which all have buttons or switches to operate them. In the A320 most are left on and are never touched unless something goes wrong. The lower panel by the trottles are mostly filled with communication devices. Looks like a lot but it is simply switches that you select to talk or listen to one frequency or another. There is some other stuff down there like the radar and control of the display panels but it is pretty intuitive. Its really not that hard to understand, assuming you know something about jet systems.

From what I could see there at around the 17:00 mark.....the reason it wouldn't slow down was because you were descending with flaps retracted. Of course it won't slow down in a dive. From the passenger cabin I see the airline pilots descend for quite a ways with the speed brakes extended. Also I've been in the jump seat with test pilots and they LOVE using the landing gear to slow down. Sometimes I think the test pilots think of the landing gear more as speed brakes......in the proper speed range, of course. You are doing quite well for someone with no training in type.

Vor 2 Monate

+Bryce Gman That is the thing just about every PC simmer doesn't understand. The collimated display, with it's image projected at infinity makes a huge difference to the experience. Even more so than the motion platform base in my opinion. Looking out of the flight deck window and into the distance is completely different from looking at a screen (or even ten screens) in the near or middle field distance. It's one of those 'has to be seen to be believed' things in my opinion.

Vor 22 Tage

Vor 23 Tage

These things use full wraparound collimated displays. You don't look at a screen as such. You look out of the window into the distance. The image is focused at infinity.

The best is X-Plane 11 (Windows/Mac/Linux only), however it's priced quite steeply so I'd reccomend FSX (Windows only) or Prepar3D (Windows Only). If you want a mobile one, go for Infinite flight (iOS/Android). The first three should work if you have a home cockpit. Edit: Also theres FlightGear for free, however it's nowhere near as realistic. And note that X-Plane 11 has excellent lighting and physics, but you may need a decent processor to run it. I can run it at quite a good quality (HDR with 2x antialiasing and medium textures) at 40fps (on the ground, where fps is lowest) with an Intel Core i7, 16GB ram (base model of the Macbook Pro 15" from 2015). Hope this helps.

+Ortac it's quite startling how so many people don't understand the workings of collimated displays. It's this that sets the visuals apart from anything they can achieve on a PC. Even with multiple screens you're still looking at a screen a few feet away. I've been lucky enough to have a couple of hours in a full commercial sim and it's startlingly real.

Bloody well considering you had no Co-Pilot as well as no training on this! Oh and about the auto-brakes, to be honest, Airbus system doesn't allow selecting autobrakes Max for landing for the A320- it's one of those protections.
