Dear friends and followers, in today´s video I´ll be explaining, why pilots say "Heavy" at the end of their callsign.
I´m sure many of you have listened to LIVE ATC conversations here on youtube, and ever so often you can hear the controller and the pilot communicate with each other and the pilot always ends by saying his callsign and "Heavy" at the end.
The "Heavy" is related to the ICAO wake turbulence categories. As all flying objects create turbulent air in their path, airplanes create so-called wake turbulence. And the heavier and the greater the angle of attack is the stronger the wake turbulence become. Therefore it´s absolutely vital that airplanes keep a safe distance to each other so to not enter the turbulence of the preceding plane.
Cause of that matter the ICAO came up with a wake turbulence weight category chart.
But see more about the minimum separations etc. in the video :)
Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe

Another airplane in the category “Super” is Antonov 225, which is even larger than A380 (MTOW is 640 tons).

Notable is the 757. Doesnt fall in the heavy weight category, but is considered heavy due to big wake turbulence generation.

I thought "heavy" meant they just didn't do the calculations, and they just know they are overweight.

hello captain joe, I want to know if the aircraft use the suffix heavy according to the weight they are carrying at the moment or even without considerable weight it remains heavy in the case of A330, and I also want to know if the B747-8 uses the super suffix like the A380

*Looks at the comments* Don't people realize fuel not only produces water vapor and CO2 when it is burned but can also absorb water vapor during storage and still (sort of) work? When fuel is burned in a cold environment the water vapor is invisible at high temperatures near the engine, but as it gets farther away it cools, condenses, and forms a visible trail of cloud?

As an interested non pilot I don't mean to take up space but you answered this question so we'll I wanted to ask another I have. How does ATC indicate that there is a slower plane landing in front of plane needing more landing room? Or is this an issue the piolet needs to know on his own?

I first learned about wake turbulence from Frank Peretti's fiction book "Flying Blind" last book in the Cooper kids series. Jay Cooper's Cessna Skyhawk was overturned by a 757's engine failure wake turbulence unexpectedly, knocking Jay's flight instructor unconscious and Jay himself blind from a head injury but otherwise unharmed.

2:32 "... a serious threat for the preceding plane" - I think you had meant to say "... a serious threat for the following plane" since surely the issue only affects the planes *behind* the plane which is causing the wake (i.e. not the planes before).

When I was a civilian flight student, my classmates and I would go "plane spotting" at the large international airport nearby (well, OK, not that large, it was Tulsa, bet you can guess the school.) We could literally sit right off the northernmost end of the runway and watch the big boys go right overhead. A few seconds afterward, you could hear a sizzling sound from the very tight wingtip vortices coming off the aircraft. It was a great early lesson in how powerful wake turbulence can be (that and a *really* old FAA video entitled "Caution! Wake Turbulence!")

Slightly off-topic, but In Flight Simulator, any time tower says: "Concorde Charlie Lima 215 Heavy, Go around". The only acceptable response is "Tower: Concorde does NOT Go Around. Cleared to Land ILS Runway 11 Right; Charlie Lima 215 Heavy!"

So when 'heavy' planes are are under control of an ARTCC I would think the designation is not necessary. Only on approach, departure or tower, (and ground too - I think). Is that correct?

I've had a few wake up calls for the pax. Turbo props are handy for spacing you can speed up and slow down quickly, keep high for a chop and drop and if you're uncomfortable with the time behind a heavy a go around is a breeze. You're coming into land in your ATR or Dash 8 and wham you're going for a barrel roll over the runway. That gives the pax. a wakeup.
