Gear down, three green and let´s get started!
So let´s look at the different types of landing gears. The most common one out there is the single axle landing gear with a tyre fitted on each side mounted to a large strut. Mostly used on passenger jets such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320.
With increasing weight, you need more surface, so more tyres to evenly distribute the weight of the aircraft.
So if we look at the main landing gear of the Boeing 757, you have the main landing gear strut, which by the way is filled with nitrogen acting as a spring force and hydraulic fluids for dampening. Then you have the truck or boogie, and four tires in tandem pairs. But more importantly, for today´s topic, you see this little hydraulic actuator right here, the so-called truck positioning actuator aka the tilt actuator. This little actuator is attached aft of the main gear strut and pushes the rear wheels downwards forcing the forward wheels to move upwards as the truck is axially mounted to the main strut.
As the plane comes in for landing, the rear wheels touch-down first. The actuator holds up against the pushing force, otherwise, the rear tires could bounce up, slamming the forward tires into the ground. Once the weight of the plane presses the tires onto ground, a pressure relief valve opens up and the actuator collapses letting both tires touch down. This all happens in the split of a second. Once the actuator is fully compressed, so weight on wheels, it triggers the air/ground sensing unit from air to ground before the nose wheel has touched down, automatically extending the ground spoilers and allowing thrust reverser deployment and depressurizing the aircraft etc.
But see more in the video
Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe

It is also a kind of applied physics for me. Pulling a sledge (for example) is easier than pushing it. If rear tires are down it looks like the first tires to touch down are being pulled, in this way the touch might be a bit smoother. If the front ones touch down first, it won't be smoother, but I guess the plane would lose more of its (kinetic) energy in the first seconds of landing.

The answer would be more of common sense. The plane lands at a certain angle, the landing wheels cannot remain straight when landing, otherwise they could break. When tilted, its more of a balance, so it flows while the plane completes its landing.

Unusually a 2nd comment and totally off subject. Captain Joe if in your off time you have ever tasted Penfolds Bin 707 then this will be for your readers. If you haven't yet tasted then you should. Bin 707 was named by an ex-Quantas man after the Boeing 707. Few people would have predicted bin numbers would attract so much cachet. It is a wine that will eclipse most first growth Bordeaux so worth a try.

This is pure gold but it makes me feel guilty. I had heard V1 and I had heard the expression "flying" or "we're flying" and on holiday a month ago I knew there was an ex-BA captain and his wife (remember old contract!) so I grabbed him at a drinks party to ask him to explain. He never finished because everything he said produced further questions usually at 4 am when I couldn't sleep. Poor man was backed into several walls.

The equation must be like this: which is more likely possible in real world solid ground test; taking off without gear or landing without gear? Taking off without gear is only in cartoons. The answer obviously is landing without gear. So by implication we should call them "TAKING OFF GEARS". And i like your provocative silly but smart question.:) After all how could you " land" if you've never "taken off"! So I go with TAKE OFF GEARS. That's it for me.

First, thanks for the videos.  Many pilots don't know or care how their airplanes are engineered. But some of us want to know as much as possible beyond our type ratings, as obviously do you.  Of course, it is about clearances and retract geometry, but the discussion about WoG or WoW is not pertinent to the tilt cylinder, as even older twins like 737 classic and MD-80's [and just about every thing else] use squat switches to signal auto brakes and spoilers and ADC.  Another point of the location requiring such tilting geometry is the gears' location to the CG.  Some aircraft have a CG envelope that extends after of the mains, DC-10's come to mind which causes an unusual behavior on landing and T-O requiring more elevator and accurate trim and unusual technique of relaxing back pressure in the flare just before touchdown to keep from slamming the nose down - try flying a -10 in a simulator and flaring like a high wing Cessna and see what happens.   Anyway, this is all caused by gear location relative to CG. My $.02

747 wing gear is also higher until the wing loses lift after touch down, to it needs to be tilted like that as the wing is flexed up a little during flight.

+BrimHawk This can not be true. Just shape the existing rim differently. No extra weight. And and that speed you do not need a big cowling to catch the wind.

Vor 26 Tage

I read somewhere that the added weight to create a system to start the wheels turning, negates the cost in tire replacement. Much cheaper to replace the tires, than to create space inside the gear well, and use more fuel, due to increased weight.

Gear bay size is not the case for the A330.. because the tilted gear is hydraulicly trimed straight during retraction so it enters the gear bay not tilted.so fundamentaly there is another reason for the tilt. Most propably is to assist smoother transition from air to ground and the opposte.
